The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations is honored to have hosted the celebration of the International Day of Nowruz at the UN Headquarters in New York on 18 March 2025, in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 64/253, which recognizes Nowruz as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and a global celebration of renewal, harmony, and cultural solidarity.

This year’s event brought together distinguished diplomats, UN officials, and representatives of the Nowruz-sponsoring countries, reaffirming the festival’s deep-rooted significance as a symbol of peace, friendship, and coexistence among nations. The program commenced with welcoming remarks by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who underscored the shared cultural heritage of Nowruz and its enduring message of unity in diversity.

The event featured insightful reflections from high-level UN dignitaries. Their remarks emphasized Nowruz as a celebration of peace, mutual respect, and environmental sustainability, aligning with the UN’s core values and global aspirations.

Representatives of the Nowruz-sponsoring nations—Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—delivered remarks highlighting their respective cultural traditions and the shared heritage that unites their peoples. The event also featured a special video presentation showcasing Nowruz celebrations worldwide, as well as traditional music performances, which enriched the evening with the vibrant melodies of Nowruz.

A highlight of the celebration was the Haft-Seen display, a traditional Persian arrangement symbolizing the values and aspirations of Nowruz. The meticulously curated table featured seven symbolic items, each beginning with the Persian letter 'S', including Sabzeh (sprouted wheat or lentils) for rebirth, Samanu (sweet pudding) for strength, Senjed (dried oleaster fruit) for love, Seer (garlic) for health, Seeb (apple) for beauty, Somagh (sumac) for the sunrise, and Serkeh (vinegar) for patience and wisdom. The display served as a powerful visual representation of Nowruz’s profound spiritual and cultural significance, inspiring attendees to reflect on its timeless message of renewal, prosperity, and harmony.

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its deep appreciation to all esteemed guests, speakers, and performers who contributed to the success of this celebration.

The evening concluded with a reception and Iftar, allowing participants to further engage in dialogue and cultural exchange, strengthening the bonds of friendship among nations.

As Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and new beginnings, the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms its commitment to fostering international cooperation and cultural understanding, guided by the enduring spirit of Nowruz.

Nowruz Pirouz!
