Mr. Gholamhossein Darzi assumed his duties as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations on 18 July 2025.
Prior to his appointment in New York, Ambassador Darzi served as Director General for International Environment and Sustainable Development Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran (March 2023 – July 2025). In this capacity, he was in charge of facilitating multilateral socio-economic and humanitarian cooperation in such areas as sustainable development, migration, drug control, and disaster mitigation; he has also acted as the national focal point for key international environmental mechanisms, including the UNFCCC, UNFF, and GEF, and led the Islamic Republic of Iran’s delegation in the negotiations at COP28 and COP29.
From 2009 to 2020, Ambassador Darzi was seconded to the Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he held the position of Director in the Department of Economic Affairs (2009–2017), and subsequently served as Deputy Head and Head of the OIC Office in Baghdad (2017–2020).
His previous diplomatic postings include assignments at the Embassies of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Rome, Italy (Second Secretary, 1995–1998), and Ankara, Turkey (Third Counsellor, 2001–2005).
Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992, Ambassador Darzi has participated in numerous international meetings and conferences, led various multilateral initiatives, and directed multiple diplomatic and political departments.
Born in March 1967, Ambassador Darzi holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and is fluent in English, Arabic, and Turkish. He is married and blessed with a son and a daughter.
