Statement by
Ms. Fatemeh Arab Bafrani
Second Secretary
Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations
Before the Third Committee of the 77th Session of the General Assembly
“Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea”
New York, 27 October 2022
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Thank you Mr. Chair,
Iran reiterates its serious concern over the continued abuse of this platform for consideration of reports emanating from politically motivated mandates. Such mandates and their ensuing reports are in line with futile policies of double standards and biased approaches toward the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its principled position concerning the report presented by the SR on the human rights situation in Eritrea that the counterproductive practice of considering country-specific situations in the 3rd Committee of the General Assembly, and exploitation of this platform for political ends is in breach of the UN Charter as well as the principles of universality, non-selectivity, and objectivity in addressing human rights issues and undermines cooperation and dialogue as the essential principles to promote and protect all universally recognized human rights.
In our view, the UPR provides a mechanism for reviewing the human rights situation in all Member States on an equal basis without recrimination and with the full participation of the concerned governments.
Thank you
