“Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Burundi”

New York, 27 October 2022

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Mr. Chair,

On the report presented on Burundi, my delegation reiterates its position that the continuation of the practice of selective consideration of country-specific situations, in particular in the Third Committee, and exploitation of this platform for political ends contravenes with the principles of universality, non-selectivity and objectivity in addressing human rights issues. Such approach undermines cooperation and dialogue as the essential principles for the promotion and protection of human rights.

In our view, the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council provides a mechanism of addressing the human rights situations on an equal footing without naming and shaming. Such functioning mechanism must not be weakened by parallel ones.

Thank you
