Before the Third Committee of the 77th Session of the General Assembly
On Agenda Item 68: (a-d) Promotion and Protection of Human Rights
Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Paulo Sérgio PINHEIRO
New York, 26 October 2022
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr. Chair,
My delegation regrets that the cause of human rights in Syria is being abused and exploited in this Committee yet again, while the Syrian people are still suffering from conflict and the humanitarian and economic situation.
Conflict is only one of the difficulties Syrian civilians are going through. Although it is difficult to determine the precise economic effects of inhuman unilateral coercion measures on the worsening of the country's economic and humanitarian conditions.
We believe the ongoing aggression of the Israeli regime against Syria is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime.
We emphasize the need for facilitating the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of refugees and IDPs to their original place in Syria.
Furthermore, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, including Syria, must be fully respected. In this case, such an effort can be done by ending foreign aggression against Syria as well as the country's occupation, dealing with terrorist threats, and lifting those illegal sanctions.
Iran supports the Syrian government's full cooperation with the UN and relevant humanitarian organizations involved in the delivery of humanitarian aid to people in need.
I thank you
