Statement by
Ms. Fatemeh Arab Bafrani
Second Secretary
Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations
Before the Third Committee of the 77th Session of the General Assembly
On “Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Torture”
New York, 14 October 2022
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Iran thanks the distinguished panelists for their briefings.
Iran is fully committed to promoting and protecting human rights. Iran prohibits any form of torture according to article 38 of its constitution. But, Mr. Chair, some specific states even by being the State Party to CAT or SPT, still are in need of deep and urgent action regarding the situation of torture and mistreatment in their society.
Iran agrees with the SR that we should look back at challenges and gaps in this regard.
It`s time for these self-appointed human rights guardians to address the deep-rooted human rights challenges that their own peoples and societies face.
For instance, in the US, several challenges exist, including but not limited to, racism, racial discrimination, the sea of inequality, torture and inhuman treatment, the prevalence of gun violence on their streets and at their schools, and the deplorable condition of Notorious Guantanamo prison.
It is time for these governments to stop making business with seeking political gains from the cause of human rights.
My question to SR is, how does the Special Rapporteur address the concerning situation in such countries?
