Interactive Dialogue with the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development

New York, 17 October 2022

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Mr. Chairman,

The Islamic Republic of Iran takes note with appreciation of the annual report of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (A/HRC/51/36).

My delegation reiterates its support to the Expert Mechanism’s mandate, as was requested by the Council to pay particular attention to the international dimension of the right to development and how this aspect would make the practical implementation of the right to development effective at the national, regional and international levels;

Mr. Chairman,

The right to development was the only human right explicitly referred to in the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. According to various relevant agreed documents, including the Proclamation of Teheran (adopted at the International Conference on Human Rights in 1968), the achievement of lasting progress in the implementation of human rights was dependent upon sound and effective national and international policies of economic and social development.

We do support the mandate of the Expert Mechanism and further encourage it to continue its practice of coordinating with the relevant mandate holders and experts, especially further cooperation with the SR on the negative impact of UCMs on the human rights of developing countries.

Moreover, we endorse the recommendation of the Expert Mechanism that States should make non-discrimination, inclusive participation and equality of opportunity for development cardinal principles in fulfilling their duty to cooperate to promote international development and centrality of  International cooperation and partnership for development on promoting and strengthening universal respect for human rights for all without any distinction and discrimination;

I thank you.
