Statement by
Mr. Ali Karimi Magham
Political Attaché
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Before the Third Committee, UNGA 76
On Item 72: Racism; and Item 73: Self-Determination
The ASG for Human Rights, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
New York, 27 October 2021
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr. Chair,
Human rights should be seen as a common heritage of humanity which has been initiated and developed by valuable contributions of all civilizations and cultures. Basic principles and components of human rights including non-discrimination, justice, equality and due process of law are imperative for every society that seeks prosperity and welfare of its citizens.
Double Standards lead the Human Rights Council nowhere, but only squander the Council’s resources. Weaponization of human rights, selectivity and double standards should be shelved and abandoned - once and for all. Instead, human rights mechanisms such as the Universal Periodic Review which emerged from the collapse of the highly politicized former Commission on Human Rights should be strengthened.
Mr. Chair,
The Islamic Republic of Iran is deeply concerned about advancing country-specific resolutions by the West. They are seriously detrimental to the cause of human rights and counter-productive for its promotion. Iran’s commitment to protection and promotion of human rights is deeply rooted in its rich historical, religious and cultural heritage. My Government has always shown our determination and willingness to contribute to promotion and protection of human rights based on a constructive dialog and cooperation with Member States as well as UN human rights mechanisms. We will continue to do so despite all the shenanigans and malevolence.
I thank you.
