On Draft Decision L.51: “Treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices”

Mr. Chairman, 

I have taken the floor to explain the position of my delegation regarding draft decision L.51 entitled “Treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices”.

We will abstain on L.51 because it does not advocate an instrument capable of addressing all of the conditions required for a total disarmament instrument and instead advocates the commencement of negotiations on such a Treaty based on a limited mandate contained in an old document which is no longer relevant to today’s realities.
