Before the Third Committee, UNGA 76

On Item 74: Promotion and Protection of Human Rights

The Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the DPR of Korea

New York, 22 October 2021

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Mr. Chair,

My delegation would like to first of all align itself with the statement delivered by Azerbaijan on behalf of the non-aligned movement.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its principled position concerning the report presented by the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of KOREA that the counterproductive practice of considering country specific situations in the third committee, and exploitation of this platform for political ends violate the UN Charter as well as principles of universality, non-selectivity and objectivity in addressing human rights issues. Such measures undermine cooperation and dialogue as the essential principles to promote and protect all universally recognized human rights.

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the Universal Periodic Review provides a mechanism for reviewing the human rights situation in all Member States on an equal basis without recrimination and with full participation of the concerned States.

I thank you.
