On Item 74: Promotion and Protection of Human Rights
The Chair of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
New York, 21 October 2021
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr. Chair,
First of all, we would like to thank the Chair of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for all the efforts. The good practices and recommendations can be considered as a guideline for future endeavors to improve the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has during the COVID-19 pandemic taken disability-inclusive recovery measures, including activities such as prioritizing vaccination for persons with disabilities and improving the level of care services all across the country. To further guarantee participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making and for the first time, we managed to employ deaf interpreters in the recent presidential election. We have also managed to dispatch portable and access-friendly ballot boxes to collect their votes.
The active participation of persons with disabilities have played a key role in paving the way for the 2009 accession of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Mr. Chair,
Barriers for persons with disabilities living in countries where they’ve fallen victim to the United States’ inhumane and unlawful unilateral coercive measures are much more serious and concerning compared to situation of those living elsewhere. As a result, they unfortunately suffer enormous difficulties to have access to much-needed medicines as well as modern and advanced rehabilitation technologies. This should be a matter of serious concern for the international community; it shouldn’t remain silent and must instead take practical measures for promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
I thank you.
