Before the Third Committee, UNGA 76
On Item 74: Promotion and Protection of Human Rights
The Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants
New York, 18 October 2021
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr. Chair,
The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to this agenda item which focuses on promotion and protection of human rights of migrants. The violation of human rights of migrants especially those who’ve fallen victim to organized criminal groups has always been a matter of grave concern for the Islamic Republic of Iran. I am pleased to announce that my Government has allocated sufficient resources and attention to respond as effectively as possible to protect the basic rights of migrants.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently supported an international response to smuggling of migrants. To that end, our law enforcement agencies have been working tirelessly to ensure that migrants are protected and enjoy every access to necessary assistance. It demonstrates the indispensable role of my Government in preventing and combatting smuggling of migrants in the region.
Mr. Chair,
The unlawful and inhumane unilateral coercive measures, which are a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and basic principles of international law, undermine the migrants’ right to health, impede their access to medicine, and ultimately exacerbate the situation for them. Despite these challenges, the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to reiterate its commitment and unwavering resolve to fight against smuggling of migrants and help ensure protection and promotion of their rights.
I thank you.
