On agenda item 44: “Effects of Atomic Radiation”
Joint General Debate
New York- 17 October 2022
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr. Chairman,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
At the outset, I would like to express my delegation’s gratitude to the Chairman of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) for presenting the report of the 69th session of the Committee. Furthermore, my delegation commends the work achieved by the Committee over the course of the session and its significant role in assessing the levels of radiation and its effect on humans and the environment, which is fully acknowledged by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The committee’s reports have always been valuable to the scientific communities and policymakers for improving world peace and public health. I am confident that this process will continue, given the high, valuable and reliable position of the scientific authority at the international level.
Distinguished colleagues,
No one can deny that nuclear energy continues to be a clean, sustainable, and non-exhaustible energy source in our daily life. The use of nuclear technology in, among other things, producing electricity, healthcare, agriculture, crop breeding, industry, and food preservation, as well as scientific and technological R&D as an inalienable right of all nations, is rapidly increasing. However, we admit that despite all of the benefits and diverse uses of nuclear technology, including its increasing need in our daily lives, there is a vital need for protecting people, workers and the environment from the harmful effect of radiation. Therefore, this technology must unquestioningly be handled safely to avoid further disastrous nuclear accidents.
In this regard, the role of the Committee is of paramount importance. We are also fully aware that the nature of this Committee requires experts of high caliber in relevant fields. For this sake, what has been a crucial priority is adequate, assured and predictable funding as well as sufficient secretariat staffing with balanced geographical distribution. We consider that the appropriate administrative measures will enable the performance of the present functions of the Committee and preserve its independence.
Mr. Chairman,
At the national level, the Islamic Republic of Iran, with more than 90 years of history in the utilization of radiation sources, welcomes all consultations between Iranian scientists and the Scientific Committee conducting its mission. We reaffirm that all member states should commit to cooperating with the Committee in fulfilling its responsibilities.
In conclusion, my delegation would like to reiterate Iran’s support for the valuable endeavor being undertaken by UNSCEAR.
I thank you.
