Ambassador's Statement: Nakba Day

Iran's Ambassador has delivered a statement on the occasion of the Nakba Day. The full text of the statement is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Statement by H.E. Mr. Amir Saeid Iravani Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations

On the Occasion of Nakba Day

15 May 2025—New York

Mr. Chair,

Nakba day was indeed a disastrous catastrophe that befell not just Palestine but the whole world and humanity. Palestinian people were uprooted on that day from their ancestral homes, forcibly displaced, persecuted collectively, denied of their fundamental rights including those as the rightful owners of their own land. Yet, that was not the end of catastrophe but unfortunately just the beginning. From that day up until now, the Palestinian people have constantly been victimized, persecuted, deprived of their homeland, and suffered immense and unspeakable injustices. The Nakba day did not stop but has exacerbated over decades.

Nakba day is ongoing for over 77 years now, the current catastrophic situation in Palestine is self-evident and needs no elaboration as the world is well cognizant of the magnitude of appalling brutality of the Israeli regime. Committing atrocious crimes including genocide and war crimes leading to the death and forcible displacement of millions of civilians including women and children, policy and practice of belligerent occupation, deliberate destruction of infrastructures especially humanitarian facilities, perpetration of blatant aggression against sovereign States in the region are a fraction of the crimes and violations of the regime.

As we are convened in this meeting, the Israeli regime with the aid and assistance of the United States and its other western supporters is deliberately targeting hospitals, schools, women, children, UN staffs, journalists and so forth which has led to death of around sixty thousand of people and much higher numbers injured, missing and still under rubbles. Evidence of egregious crimes of the regime are undeniable, the world as well as the International Court of Justice and other relevant Courts are fully aware of the details and extent of savagery of the regime. Footages of the genocidal attacks of the Israeli regime against a hospital in Palestine on 13 May 2025 whereby people were bombed, thrown into air, and shredded to pieces, is only a portion of evidence demonstrating the ongoing Nakba and immense suffering that the Palestinian people are physically and mentally enduring ever since.

Mr. Chair,

Notwithstanding, throughout these decades and even nowadays, Palestinian people have been enduring another form of grave injustice and that is false narratives propagated by the Israeli regime and its supporters especially the United States that aim to change the place of victim and culprit; to hypocritically call for peace in the region but in fact expand the scale of genocide and aggression, to claim the importance of human rights but actually grossly violate such rights of Palestinians,  to claim freedom of speech but eventually suppressing innocent people who call for ending the carnage, to claim freedom of information but in reality whitewash the horrendous crimes of the Israeli regime; all the hypocrisy only to deny the right of Palestinian people in defending themselves and to return to their homeland. The Israeli regime and its supporters are the reason that millions of Palestinian people have been displaced from their homeland, their children become orphaned, their families lost their loved ones together with the regular life in Palestine; they are the reason for the catastrophe and instability in the region. While the international community is calling time and again for the cessation of the persistent attacks of the regime against Palestinian people, it is the regime and its supporters who are intensifying their crimes under the illusion that the world might ignore such atrocities amidst their propaganda and false claims.

That is exactly why Nakba day should be remembered; it should be commemorated to bear in mind that the Israeli regime which has been implanted on the basis of occupation, apartheid and terror would only plague the region and the world with death and destruction as we witness in plain sight today; to reaffirm that the true and rightful owners of Palestine are Palestinian people and that they should return to their homeland. Moreover, Nakba day occasion should not only serve to remember the very illegitimate nature of the Israeli regime and the need to stop is brutality and war, but also to redress the grievous injustice done to Palestine resulting from the inaction of the international community throughout decades which has only emboldened the regime in pursuance of more crimes. The international community should act swiftly to end the ongoing Nakba, to stop the Israeli regime attacks, hold it fully accountable for every single life it has taken and bring it to the long overdue justice along with its supporters. We continue to condemn in the strongest possible terms the egregious crimes of the Israeli regime against Palestinian people including the genocidal attacks of the regime and highlight the urgent need to end the vicious circle of impunity that has only emboldened the Israeli regime in intensification of its wanton attacks and its deliberate infliction of severe conditions of life upon the Palestinian population.

At the end and on the occasion of 77 anniversary of Nakba day, we reaffirm our continued unwavering support to our Palestinian sisters and brothers and in support of their inherent rights including the right to return. I seize the opportunity to also remember the day once again somberly in the name of all Palestinians who lost their lives in defending their beloved Palestine and to reiterate the continued solidarity of the Islamic Republic of Iran with the Palestinian people.

I thank you.
