The following is the full text of the statement delivered by a representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran:

Explanation of Position of the Islamic Republic of Iran

before the General Assembly

on the Resolution “Education for Democracy”

4 March 2025, New York

 

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

 

Mr. President,

I take the floor to explain our position with regard to resolution entitled “Education for democracy”, which was just adopted.

At the outset, I would like to thank the Permanent Mission of Mongolia to the United Nations for facilitating this biennial resolution. My delegation voted in favor of this resolution.

We would like to refer to our previous position and observations regarding the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UNESCO’s Education 2030 Framework for Action, as well as the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030, adopted at the World Education Forum in 2015, as absolutely non-legally binding, voluntary-based instruments that merely set out a number of non-obligatory recommendations.

My delegation has announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran is not committed to those parts of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Education 2030 Framework for Action or the Incheon Declaration, which in one way or another are in contradiction with the Iranian national priorities, laws, regulations, legislation and policies; as well as cultural and values of the Iranian society.

Based on that, the Islamic Republic of Iran in its domestic developmental and educational issues will act based on its national upper handed instruments, plans and programs and these national documents will be our final source of action and reference.

Considering the references in this resolution to the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development and the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030, my delegation disassociates itself from the fifth, sixth and twelfth preambular paragraphs as well as paragraph 3 of the resolution.
